ARTIFACT 1: Triple Focus

[Acquiring a new skill, setting goals related to that new skill, and applying these toward a community change goal]

What ONE new skill do you want to focus on and develop during the first 5 weeks of Advanced Grassroots Leadership Training?
Better presentation skills: with emphasis on PowerPoint to assist with presentations.

What options to you see as practical ways to integrate your new skills as part of your grassroots work with "your organization"? Identify three ways you hope to use your new skill to support your organization.

Create a presentation about mothers and addiction and the need to support women through recovery and reunification with their children, parents, and other loved ones. **Ending stereotypes/stigma of women with additions—support the women and believe in the women.
CLARIFY ONE COMMUNITY CHANGE GOAL you want to focus on during the first 5 weeks of our program. How might you use your "new skill" to advance this community change goal?

My Purpose: END THE STIGMA

I want to find an audience to share with about removing the stigma of drug use--to promote empathy for mothers.

OBJECTIVE MET: On January 14, I presented at Prosperity Indiana with LaToya and Deborah on “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Critical Conversations” – “Undoing Structural Racism”—My part of the presentation was on IMPLICIT BIAS and the presentation explored the stigma women face who have experienced addiction as mothers.

ARTIFACT 4: Structure Approach for Initiating Policy Change

INFLUENCING POLICY:

Focus on HB 1385 to support women; it was not passed and changed to a lesser HB 1309; THEN opposition to HB 1309

My Goal: HELPING WOMEN HAVE HEALTHY PREGNANCIES and HEALTH BABIES

I designed a strategic plan for partnering with local not for profits THEN networking with public officials to push for policy change by passing an Indiana House Bill that protects working women during pregnancy and the first year of mothering.

  1. State why a policy needs to be developed or modified, including:

    • Women are not receiving the health care they need during pregnancy.

    • Women are not being treated fairly at work during pregnancy because there are not required accommodations like a limit to standing time or the weight of objects they lift, or even the number of times they can take bathroom breaks.

    • Women working in high paying jobs get accommodations and leave with assurances that they will have a job when they return from pregnancy leave. AND many of them get paid leave for up to three months.

    • The current laws on leave time and working conditions are not enforced nor effective.

    • HB 1309 does not provide clear accommodations and GUTTED the good policies from HB 1385.

    • Existing or emerging conditions pose a threat to public health by putting women’s health at risk and their babies health at risk.
